Product Design
One major factor that sets Valandré apart from other brands is our unique gear construction.
Using the human form as a guide, our fabric is formed into shapes that surround every part of your body, minimizing excess weight while keeping consistent levels of insulation at every point. This is the foundation of tubular bell construction.
We start with a cylindrical shape that follows the human form perfectly, then cover that shape with a second, larger cylinder. We then connect the smaller and larger cylinders with precisely cut baffles, or ribs, following the contours of the body. Now, we have a construction technique that is miles ahead of everyone else. With this precise contouring, we can increase the temperature-to-weight ratio in our products to unheard-of levels. This unique design has been recognized by several industry awards. It’s in this one-of-a-kind 3D space that our down clusters can expand and perform to the maximum.
So, why isn’t everyone doing this?
Frankly, it’s too labor intensive for most sleeping bag manufacturers. Valandré is the only specialist in the world able and willing to elevate down gear production to a technologically-influenced art form. Our down products contain as many as 91 individually-cut pieces to deliver the ultimate fit – more insulation around the torso and foot box and full insulation around the head and forehead.
In short, nothing performs as well in terms of weight and packability as a Valandré product.
All our fabrics are sourced from Asahi Kasei, a Japanese materials company out of Osaka famous for their exclusive polyamide 6.6 yarn. These yarns are woven and dyed in independent factories according to strict traditional Japanese quality standards.
As the outside fabric on our goose down bags, we use an Asahi Kasei impact 6.6 nylon rip-stop. This is a premium nylon fiber, roughly 20% stronger than standard nylon. It also performs 20% better against UV and general abrasion as well. It also has a higher melting point, making the fabric more resistant to heat and friction. These nylon 6.6 yarns also have superior colorfastness, making our products less susceptible to fading from sunlight and ozone and yellowing from nitrous oxide. This yarn offers excellent durability at an uber-low weight.
Finally, our fabrics are given a Durable Water Repellent finish, which systematically rejects both water and humidity. The repellent finish we use is Hiramatsu’s all-new “Bonnet” DWR, one of the most durable in the industry, which holds its standard even after 100+ washes.
